Michael Garay

Hi Michael;

A five-minute news package is a great idea.  Tell me, what makes it activist?  I like that you're exploring in this piece how others are using social media to speak out in the current political climate.  And I also like that you are going to be asking a question within the piece.  Why don't you consider answering the question? If you want to make this an activist piece in itself, perhaps you can go beyond looking at the activism of others.  something for you to consider.

One thing in the proposal that left me a bit confused is in the first paragraph when you say you'll run interviews in Feb and March, and then a few sentences later refer to it as a year-long investigation.  You'll need to clarify, in your pitch, exactly the timing of this work -- as it is due at the end of this spring semester.

I'll be posting some specifics for the pitch.  I look forward to hearing yours!

Thanks.

Hi Michael;

You have some great sources listed in the reference section at the back of you literature review paper, but most of them i don't see within the body of the paper itself.  You'll need to incorporate all of them and cite them properly within the body of the review.  When you turn in the final paper that accompanies your new project, you can fix that.  The final paper will consist of a short written description of your project and the literature review.

I hope the project itself is going well.

  4. Michael, is it possible it is a cookie issue? Or the kind of browser you're using. I have successfully posted using both Chrome and Firefox but initially I had some issues as well. Enabling cookies helped.

  6. Annotated Bibliography:

    Alternative and Activist New Media
    By: Leah Lievrouw
    This source provides a perfect example of how Alternative and Activist New Media exhibits ways for activists, artists, and citizen groups around the world to use new media to essentially confront dominant media culture. This is a vital source to look through in my research.

    Future Active: Media Activism and the Internet
    By: Graham Meikle
    This source provides a great take on how television will evolve. The bigger question is, will it be an online platform? Remember when the internet first came about? I can. There was all this talk about it fueling change, specifically social change as well as charge up democracy therefor galvanizing the masses. The internet as it is today, allows us to be our own publishers and create change when we see fit. This book is something I look forward to reading.

    Journalism as Activism: Recoding Media Power
    By: Adrienne Russell
    This source really spoke to me. I think it’ll be centerpiece/backbone for my work. Being a journalist myself, Adrienne Russell makes valid points on how journalism remains one of the main sites of communication power, an expanded space where citizens, protesters, PR professionals, tech developers and hackers can directly shape the news. Russell showcases, rather effectively the power of the media and the way the relationship between digital journalism and digital activism has shaped coverage of the online civil liberties movement, the Occupy movement, and the climate change movement. She explains that we have the power to change or alter digital space and modify our media environments.

    By Any Media Necessary: The New Youth Activism

    By: Henry Jenkins
    This source provides a widespread look into how youth are engaging in new ways to promote and better communicate social, political, and economic changes. We are seeing more and more youngsters engaging in new forms of communication like social media platforms, videos and memes, to encounter political change—‘by any media necessary.’ What I enjoy most in this book, are the case studies which report a wide range of organizations, networks, and movements involving a younger generation engaged in the political process, anywhere from the Harry Potter Alliance which fights for human rights in the name of the popular fantasy franchise to immigration rights advocates using superheroes to dramatize their struggles. In sum, there is a youth movement that has found a new way to express themselves to enact change.

    The Activist's Handbook: Winning Social Change in the 21st Century, Edition 2
    By: Randy Shaw
    The source provides a guide to winning the battle of positive social change if we have a plan. What interests me the most is the progressive political forecast within the handbook as well as how we as a nation can win the battle of social change if we stick together. Important questions are proposed. ‘How should activists use new media tools to expose issues and mobilize grassroots support? When should activists form coalitions, and with whom? Whether it’s by inspiring fear and loathing in politicians, building diverse coalitions, using ballot initiatives, or harnessing the media, the courts, and the electoral process towards social change.’ I think this will be a god read and a nice addition to the research.

  7. These are great citations, Michael. When you write your literature review, be sure to talk about how these connect very specifically to your own project. nice choices.
